Gigrin Farm, Rhayader, Powys, Mid Wales

by Val123

Gigrin Farm is a working upland sheep farm in mid Wales it is set in approx 200 acres rising from 700 to 1200ft about sea level. The views over the Wye and Elan valleys are spectacular. Gigrin Farm provides a feeding station for the wild Red Kite population.

For anyone wishing to photograph this spectacular Bird of Prey in the wild then this location is a must, at 3pm (2pm in the winter) a trailer full of prime beef is put out for the kites - what happens next has to be seen to believed.

The sky is full of Red Kites all coming into feed, the photographic opportunities are amazing. In addition to the Kites - buzzards, heron, crows and a number of other birds all attempt to share in the feast.

The Centre opened in the winter of 1992/93 when 6 birds were visiting the farm, by 2006 over 400 birds where coming in for food in the winter.

The centre has a number of hides including a purpose built photography hide and a tower hide (you need to book these as places are limited).

A lot of people leave soon after the feed has taken place - however don't be in a hurry to rush off - the Kites continue to come for sometime after you think it's all over and there are some great opportunities missed by rushing off too soon.
Gigrin is definitely on my list of return visits.
